You’re Braver Than You Think
Courage. It seems like some people just have an unending supply of it, while some of us get nervous to paddle out and catch a wave or even take a hike by ourselves. But what’s the difference between someone who quits her job, hops on a plane and makes a new life for herself, or someone who crawls her way past giant spiders to explore a deep, dark cave, and someone who sits at home waiting for life to happen? Nothing. There’s nothing holding you back except for yourself.
I used to be really scared to do a lot of things—until someone very wise told me, “Bravery can only come from having something to be brave about.” If you don’t get out there and take a chance, you’ll never know what could have happened. You’ll never know if caving is your new favorite hobby if you can’t get past the spiders. Do it once and suddenly it’s not so scary anymore. Do it twice and suddenly you can’t remember ever been scared in the first place.
So the next time something scares you, remember that it’s all in your head—literally. If something bad is going to happen, it’s going to happen whether you worry about it or not—better to give it your best and be pleasantly surprised than sit at home and make lists about everything that might go wrong. Find something to be brave about, because chances are, you’re braver than you think.
